2017 Cheryl Flanagan Foster Care Award

Tuesday, 12 September 2017

The 2017 Cheryl Flanagan Foster Care Award was presented on Friday 8 September at the BCYF Foster Carer thank you morning tea, held as part of the organisations Foster Care Week celebrations. Now in its 4th year, the annual award honours the memory of Cheryl Flanagan whose dedication and commitment to the BCYF Foster Care program and children in care was exemplary.

Each year, BCYF invite nominations from foster carers for children and young people in their care to receive help to support their social, academic or physical development.BCYFCFA4

Announcing the winner of this year’s award, BCYF Board Chair John Frame said,

“On behalf of Simon Flanagan and family who are with us today, it gives me great pleasure in presenting the 2017 Cheryl Flanagan Award, which will provide a semester of tutoring for a teenage girl in care to help with her secondary school studies."

This year's award was generously sponsored by Integral Insurance Services.

Hosted by local personality Roxanne Bennett, the BCYF Foster Care Week thank you event was attended by more than 40 foster carers.

Max Broadley, Barwon Child, Youth & Family’s Acting CEO said that being a foster carer is a special but often thankless job, so this annual event is one small way to acknowledge those in our community who have opened their hearts and homes to support children and young people across Geelong.

“Barwon Child, Youth & Family foster carers play an important role in giving children and young people who are unable to live at home with their own family, a safe, loving and nurturing environment. We want our amazing foster carers to know how appreciated they are, so this is an important opportunity for us to say thank you for their generosity, dedication and tireless efforts in making a difference in the lives of children and young people who need it most,” Mr Broadley said.

2017 Foster Care Week runs from 10 - 16 September and this year’s theme is 'Shine A Light’. For more information on becoming a foster carer contact Barwon Child, Youth & Family on 03 5221 4466 or visit www.bcyf.org.au or Foster Care Association of Victoria www.fcav.org.auwww.fcav.org.au
