Strengthening Family Connections funded

BCYF was successful in securing a federal government grant to ensure the continuation of its Strengthening Family Connections program – awarded $371,250 for the next two years.

The funding, announced by the Morrison Government in April, is set to benefit approximately 240 families through the program.

Strengthening Family Connections is a free eight-week program for parents and their children aged between 8-12 years, with the aim to build a positive family culture and strengthen connections in families, to lead to successful, confident children and parents.

BCYF has delivered this pioneering program since 2013, having modelled it on similar evidence-based programs overseas.

The Strengthening Family Connections program sees BCYF facilitators run parallel sessions for children and parents to assist participants develop resilience and manage family conflict. Families are self-referred or referred by a contact point, such as a school.

“Securing funding for the program means families are not only aided in building positive cultures within the home environment, but the long-term goals of a reduction in family conflict and violence, and financial stress are also supported,” BCYF CEO Mr Sandy Morrison said.

“This funding commitment is a terrific recognition of the work BCYF’s Family & Community Services team does in delivering the Strengthening Family Connections program, and the benefits it provides for families and the wider Barwon region community.”

Sarah Henderson, the Federal Member for Corangamite, said she was proud to advocate for Strengthening Family Connections, having met with BCYF facilitators and a family who had participated in the program.

“Early intervention, and equipping families with the skills to support each other strengthens families and, in turn, strengthens our communities,” she said.
