BCYF are currently seeking expression of interest for Lead Tenants aged 21 years or over to assist us to support young people in a shared living environment.

The lead tenant role is a voluntary live-in position that involves a 12 – 24 month commitment in exchange for rent free accommodation. You will have your own room. The Lead Tenant would pay for their own food, cleaning products etc. however no rent or payment for utilities is required.

The Lead Tenant is required, in liaison with supporting agencies, to ensure that house rules are maintained. The Lead Tenant is not a professional support role but rather a positive role model living in a shared property.

This position is ideally suited to someone who is interested in, or actively studying in the Human Services Field. The position offers ongoing training and support. The position would suit someone who is prepared to spend most nights at home however BCYF acknowledge that this is not always possible and may be dependent on a Volunteers’ already existing employment and/or training commitments.

Before entering a Lead Tenant property, each young person undergoes a case managed, referral and matching process. This ensures that each young person is well-considered and enters an appropriate accommodation model matching their needs.Young people residing in a Lead Tenant property are actively working towards or engaged in employment, education or training.

The program’s aim is to empower young people to develop their independent living skills whilst under the guidance of a Lead Tenant volunteer. For example, young people are expected to participate in regular weekly meetings and fulfil household duties a number of times per week to develop and enhance their independence.

We are looking for individuals who:

  • Are interested in, or actively studying in the Human Services Field;
  • Have good living skills;
  • Have an understanding of youth issues;
  • Are able to build strong rapport and communicate effectively with young people;
  • Have a genuine belief in supporting young people who may have challenging and complex issues.
