Do you have an investment property you’re looking to rent?

You can help reduce youth homelessness.

In Victoria, each year approximately 500 young people aged 16-18 leave State care and often must make the transition to independence with out the support of a family. BCYF’s new Housing Pathways Program is aiming to reduce youth homelessness by providing additional accomodation options for these vulnerable young people.

You can make a difference by leasing your investment property to BCYF. Some of the benefits to landlords include:

  • Guaranteed rent
  • Property insurance reimbursement
  • Upgrade of smoke detectors and annual fire auditing
  • No real estate agent fees
  • Regular property and garden upgrades and maintenance
  • Live-in BCYF volunteer mentor

The landlord of the first property to be secured under the Housing Pathways Program, knows firsthand how life changing supporting young people with accommodation options can be. As a young person, he spent time living in our City Limits emergency accommodation refuge and other social housing programs, before successfully going on to complete a University degree and finding secure employment. He now owns an investment property and says the additional terms of the agreement regarding security of rent and property along with his desire to give something back to the community encouraged him to sign a head lease agreement with BCYF.

“I feel that my property is being well managed and that I am contributing to my community and other young people in a helpful way,” landlord John said.

Young people in the program are supported by a Lead Tenant volunteer mentor who also lives at the property and a BCYF Key Worker to improve their independence skills and help them develop strong long term positive outcomes.

Mandy Baxter, BCYF Youth Services Manager said local property owners are encouraged to join the program.

“When young people leaving care have the right supports they need, they have an increased change of going on to further education, training and employment, improved physical and mental health as well as enhanced connections with their community. If any landlords have properties available and would like to discuss options for supporting other young people I encourage them to get in touch with us at BCYF.”
