Northern Bay Family Centre
The Northern Bay Family Centre aims to help young families in Corio and Norlane to improve their lives through co-ordinated and integrated family health, support, well-being and education services offered on-site at Northern Bay P- 12 College, Goldsworthy Rd. Corio. This will be achieved by:
- Conducting parent support programs and young family playgroups
- Facilitating parent education and information
- Encouraging community networking activities
These stated objectives are reflective of the Family Centre program aims to improve social inclusion and reduce potential barriers that alter access and participation in the Corio Norlane 3214 community, consistently identified as being amongst the most disadvantaged regions of Victoria and Australia.
The Family Centre is ideally located to offers free activities, programs and support services for new young families, and local young parents in Corio-Norlane and across Geelong. An early intervention and strength-based 'early years' framework, and the Family Centre offers a safe, welcoming and inclusive play-based learning environment for children aged 0-5 yrs.
The Family Centre programs enhances access to quality early year experiences for children and social opportunity and connections for their parents. Building social cohesion and personal resilience through positive relationships across the community the Family Centre evidences consistently positive long term parent and family engagement. A collaborative grassroots project since its early beginnings in 2005, the Family Centre community development model aims to break the negative cycle of educational disengagement and social isolation for young and new parents with young children (0-5 yrs.).
The Family Centre model evidences consistent outcomes through building collaborative partnerships and developing new pathways to education for children and parents, and to linking families and services, including welfare, education and health services, in the local community. Key local service providers support quality program growth and delivery, as well as offer special activities at the Centre, including Barwon Child, Youth & Family, Catholic Care, Best Start Corio Norlane Partnership, Ardoch, the Smith Family, and the City of Greater Geelong.
