Early Childhood Early Intervention Approach

To support your child in their early years, the national government has introduced a support scheme for children with developmental delay or disability aged 0 to 6, known as Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI). It’s an approach developed under the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), who administers the NDIS, has worked with a range of leading Australian early childhood intervention practitioners and researchers to design an Early Childhood Early Intervention (ECEI) approach. This approach identifies the type and level of early intervention support your child needs to facilitate/enable the best outcomes. It is a family-centred approach to support greater inclusion in mainstream settings and it’s designed to build the capacity of your child and family.

Barwon Child, Youth & Family’s role

The NDIA has teamed up with regional partners to help provide the support your child needs in a quicker and easier way. These partners are called early childhood partners, and from October, Barwon Child, Youth & Family will be one of those community partners delivering Early Childhood Early Intervention Services (ECEI) for children aged 0-6 across the Barwon Region for the NDIS.

As the early childhood partner, our specialist staff are experienced in early childhood intervention and provide assistance, advice and access to early intervention and support for your child.

Who can access the ECEI Support Scheme?

Children 0-6 years, with developmental delay or disability.

When can we access Barwon Child Youth and Family?

From Monday 2nd October 2017 Barwon Child, Youth and Family will become the entry point for families and may be contacted on:

1300 01 BCYF or 1300 01 2293
or by email on ecei@bcyf.org.au

Prior to this date, the NDIA will start to transition children over to Barwon Child, Youth and Family, who have been deemed eligible for access, to streamline the process as much as possible and to reduce family impact.
It will not be possible to support new families prior to October. We ask for your patience. It will be a busy time.

The Early Childhood Early Intervention team at Barwon Child, Youth and Family will:

  • Work with you to determine the best supports for your child and your family
  • Identify information, community-based and mainstream supports appropriately suited to your child. For example: community health services, playgroups or peer support
  • Identify if your child may benefit from some short-term intervention and provide those services. For example: if your child has developmental delay with a primary speech delay, your early childhood partner can provide some initial speech therapy which, over time, will assist it to inform the child’s longer-term support needs
  • If required, help you request NDIS access and once confirmed, work with your family to develop a plan
  • Help you with plan implementation, to assist you to engage appropriate NDIS providers.
