Free mental health webinar for parents and carers

Geelong parents and carers are invited to a free mental health webinar to help them better understand and support their young person in these challenging times.

headspace National and headspace Geelong are hosting the online education session that aims to help parents and carers better understand mental health and know what to do when they are concerned.

The webinar will build mental health knowledge, help parents and carers start a conversation with a young person about their mental health and guide them to the most appropriate help and support.

Supporting Young People and Their Mental Health will be live online at 6.30pm on Tuesday 14 September.  Register your attendance via eventbrite.

For those unable to attend, the webinar will be repeated at 6.30pm on Monday 27 September. Register online.

The initiative comes as COVID restrictions continue to provide challenges for parents and young people throughout the region.

All of BCYFs support services, including headspace Geelong, have continued to operate throughout the pandemic.

headspace is a free and confidential service that helps young people aged 12-25 with their mental and physical health.

The service offers the following tips for parents and carers concerned about their young person:

• Ask them how they’re feeling about the current COVID-19 situation and be open to where the conversation might go;

• Listen without judgment and try to remain calm, even if you feel upset;

• Watch for signs that they’re losing touch with friends and suggest ways they can keep connected; and

• It’s ok not to have the answers but together, you can work through some support options that might be helpful.
